Moved!
Well, I believe we are settled! After much
confusion and moving around, we have settled down
(finally!) in Lake Orion, Michigan. We began here,
prior to relocating to Grand Rapids, Michigan, so it
seemed as though we were returning home.
Many thanks and much heartfelt appreciation goes out
to my clients who tolerated patiently this upheaval
and confusion, the address changes and technical
issues with moving. I believe that I am fortunate
to have some of the best clients a gal could ask for!

Website Introduction
What is available at merleedesigns.com?
While some of you are long-time clients and are well
versed in my website, others are new or are visitors
and friends. Here I just want to give a brief
outline of the site, what you will find there, and
areas of special interest.
A little while ago, I updated my portfolio to a much
more usable format, which is also much more
aesthetically pleasing! The portfolio is divided
into separate sections for web,
print,
logos
and forms.
I have several articles
available which help a person who is new to the web
design arena, or who simply doesn't have a clear
understanding of what is important in their website.
Also available are ideas on how to determine what
it is you need and want, essentially a website
planning guide.
The Process
of Design tells you how I run my projects, how I
approach the design of your site, what requirements
and commitments are needed by the client.
My Blog
is a collection of announcements, commentary, Q&A,
and personal little notes. There is even a Harry
Potter countdown for us ... parents of fans!

Quality of Design
Design is not just visual! This is probably
the single, most important statement to remember
when looking for a website designer.
In order for a website to function optimally and at
peak efficiency, to do its work for you, it has to
be designed with that purpose in mind....visually,
and invisibly. The way in which a site is coded,
laid out and structured, has great impact on the
success of your website. It affects your users and
their interactions, the way in which search engines
view, spider and index your site, and the way in
which your designer/developer maintains your site.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of designers focus
only on the visual representation. While this is
very important, it is not all that there is to
website design. Please keep this in mind when
selecting your design/development team. Ask
questions about how the site is structured, how SEO
is approached, how efficient the code and
maintenance will be.
To see if your site could benefit from a code
re-write, please contact
us and request a Site Analysis.

Web design, SEO & SEM top tips
I subscribe to a fair bit of newsletters, as this is
how we share knowledge in the industry, pick up
tips, learn valuable lessons, get the skinny on new
ideas, etc.
Below are bullet points from one of the latest
newsletters I received from EntireWeb, regarding
search engine optimization considerations for your
site. At the bottom is a link to the Full Story,
the entire article from EntireWeb.
- Words that walk a fine line
- Sound like your dad: be an authority
- Engage, don't bore: keep the reader happy
- Entitled to everything: make the titles stand
out!
- Highlights: pick out the text that matters
- Standard barer: flying the flag for standards
compliance
- Back to basics: break out the dictionary and
check your spelling
- Image is everything: be picture-perfect with the
right words
- FYI: make acronyms work for your words, not
against them
- A hard cell: using tables for layout is a
crime!

Rerferral Program |
 |
There is no better advertising than word of mouth.
Referrals from existing or past clients, friends,
associates and the like are the best and most
reliable forms of reference that you can get.
However, we believe in fully rewarding those who
pass our name along. If you know someone who is in
need of some design work, please feel free to pass
our name along, or refer them to us using the form
below. If you send them to us, make sure to tell
them to mention your name so that we may thank you
properly*.

That said, I hope that you will continue to receive
my newsletters in the future...I promise there won't
be an annoying amount of them! However, I will
